This workshop, co-arranged by Focali-SIANI, will facilitate an interactive dialogue about effective ways to implement the Agenda 203 in both policy and practice by applying a landscape perspective. The event, held at SEI, has a particular focus on exchange between Swedish actors working with forest, water, agriculture, natural resources, climate and development.

New research project: Silent forests - Defaunation as the missing piece in forest governance

Focali member Torsten Krause (LUCSUS-LU) has secured a three year international post-doc grant from VR – the Swedish Research Council. He will work closely with communities in the Amazon region of both Ecuador and Colombia e.g. by studying how participatory forest monitoring can be a viable option to secure long-term successes in forest conservation that includes animal species and not just trees. Since as he states: "By not including animals as an important part of the forest ecosystem and mostly paying attention to forest cover; an incomplete and inaccurate sense of conservation success is being created. In the long run the disappearance of animals also threatens the trees and the entire forest ecosystems at large."

A new project from the Swedish Energy Agency (1,4 million kr) has landed at GMV - Centre for Environment and Sustainability. Focali members are leading and participating in the project that will start in the fall of 2016.

World Water Week Event - Forests, water and sustainable growth of cities

This seminar at World Water Week co-arranged by Focali will highlight and discuss the challenges and opportunities related to restoring and sustainably managing forests in watersheds that provide cities with water. Key note speakers from major cities Denver, Kathmandu, Nairobi and Tirana will present the links between forests and water management in their contexts. The event will be web streamed.

Forests on drained agricultural peatland are potentially large sources of greenhouse gases – insights from a full rotation period simulation

New article co-authored by Focali member Åsa Kasimir published in Biogeosciences. Through a PhD project by Hongxing He funded by the Swedish Energy Agency performed at the department of Earth Sciences at the University of Gothenburg, they show that forest production on drained peat soil is a large source of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.
