Forests, climate and livelihoods are interconnected

Forests can play a vital part for both climate- and poverty issues; in reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases and as a source of income for poor people that depend on the forest for their livelihood.

Multifunctional landscapes

Multifunctional landscapes

Many Focali researchers focus on synergies and trade-offs between different land-uses in the landscape, such as interactions between forests and agriculture

Welcome to Focali

Focali (Forest, Climate, and Livelihood research network) is a Swedish research network focusing on forest / bio-energy, climate change and poverty issues. Several Swedish universities and institutions are represented in the network. The purpose is to contribute to the provision of relevant knowledge to Sida and other Swedish authorities for the effective use of forest operations to achieve climate-poverty targets. Focali also aims to increase the flow of relevant information between scientists, industry, government and civil society.

What future for primates? Conservation struggles in the forests of Cross River State, Nigeria

What future for primates? Conservation struggles in the forests of Cross River State, Nigeria

Human induced faunal loss - defaunation - has been greatly overlooked when it comes to forest conservation and management. This recent study by Focali-members Torsten Krause, Tobias Nielsen and Fariborz Zelli with colleagues, analyzes the impacts of defaunation and associated multi-level governance gaps using Nigeria´s Cross River State forests as a case.

Beyond the borders – burdens of Swedish food consumption due to agrochemicals, greenhouse gases and land-use change

Beyond the borders – burdens of Swedish food consumption due to agrochemicals, greenhouse gases and land-use change

A significant share of Sweden's environmental impact occur overseas. Sweden's large dependency on food imports cause not only tropical deforestation but also a vast use of pesticides. In this new paper, Focali-researchers Christel Cederberg and Martin Persson with colleagues present footprint indicators to measure environmental pressures from Swedish food consumption.

Spotlight on women in science – Aida Bargues Tobella what are you up to?

Spotlight on women in science – Aida Bargues Tobella what are you up to?

Mar 07, 2019

Today on the International Women´s Day we put spotlight on an outstanding Focali member - Aida Bargues Tobella researcher at SLU and ICRAF in Kenya where she lives with her family. She is literally digging for answers on what roots and termites in the Kenyan soil has to do with availability of groundwater for people in African drylands. We had to find out more and asked her two questions:

Forests and the climate: Manage for maximum wood production or leave the forest as a carbon sink?

Forests and the climate: Manage for maximum wood production or leave the forest as a carbon sink?

The scientific community represents different viewpoints on forest-climate interactions and how to prioritize to meet the goal of the Paris Agreement. Focali-researcher Göran Berndes is co-authoring this report from KSLA that showcases discussions and conclusions from a conference with the aim of identifying knowledge gaps and priorities for future research and data collection.

Stepping up Swedish action on tropical deforestation - Dialogue on International Day of Forests

Workshop
Mar 21, 2019 10:45 AM to Mar 21, 2019 03:30 PM.

On the International Day of Forests we would like to invite you to identify entry points for Swedish actors who want to help reduce tropical deforestation. The event is organized by Focali, SIANI and GMV and is part of a dialogue series on global tropical deforestation initiated by Focali and several partners in December 2018 with the first event “Dialogue meeting on the future of the Brazilian Amazon”.

New research exposes environmental impact of Swedish consumption

New research exposes environmental impact of Swedish consumption

Feb 14, 2019

The most comprehensive and detailed research program so far on the environmental impact of Swedish consumption – PRINCE – has now published its final report on the environmental pressure from private and public consumption and investments. “What’s most important with this project is that we have developed tools for measuring the environmental impact from Swedish consumption, in Sweden as well as in the rest of the world” says Focali-member Martin Persson.
