Forests, climate and livelihoods are interconnected

Forests can play a vital part for both climate- and poverty issues; in reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases and as a source of income for poor people that depend on the forest for their livelihood.

Multifunctional landscapes

Multifunctional landscapes

Many Focali researchers focus on synergies and trade-offs between different land-uses in the landscape, such as interactions between forests and agriculture

Welcome to Focali

Focali (Forest, Climate, and Livelihood research network) is a Swedish research network focusing on forest / bio-energy, climate change and poverty issues. Several Swedish universities and institutions are represented in the network. The purpose is to contribute to the provision of relevant knowledge to Sida and other Swedish authorities for the effective use of forest operations to achieve climate-poverty targets. Focali also aims to increase the flow of relevant information between scientists, industry, government and civil society.

Rent mjöl i soppåsen? Anta kampen mot matsvinnet Sverige

Seminar
Jul 03, 2019 09:00 AM to Jul 03, 2019 09:50 AM.

Do homegardens hold the keys to food security and sustainable land management?

Do homegardens hold the keys to food security and sustainable land management?

Jun 13, 2019

Growing trees and crops on the same land for many purposes, an agricultural technique called agroforestry, has gained a lot of traction. The method promises to restrain the effects of the climate change, nurture nature’s life support systems and shield the poorest and the most vulnerable people from food shortages.

Hunting jeopardizes forest carbon storage, yet is overlooked in climate mitigation efforts

Hunting jeopardizes forest carbon storage, yet is overlooked in climate mitigation efforts

May 14, 2019

The loss of animals, often due to unregulated or illegal hunting, has consequences for the carbon storage capacity of forests, yet this link is rarely mentioned in high-level climate policy discussions, according to a new study from Lund University in Sweden and the University of Copenhagen in Denmark.

Not seeing the forest for the trees: The oversight of defaunation in REDD+ and global forest governance

Not seeing the forest for the trees: The oversight of defaunation in REDD+ and global forest governance

Throughout the tropics, forests are increasingly devoid of larger mammals - a condition referred to as empty forests. Large mammals and birds fill important roles for forest structure and composition and their depletion have implications for the forests carbon storage capacity. This new article by Focali-member Torsten Krause shows that effects of defaunation are ignored in REDD+, which compromises not only the forest ecosystem function, but also the objectives of the program.

World leaders and scientists commit to biodiversity: Focali members comment on the IPBES Global Assessment

World leaders and scientists commit to biodiversity: Focali members comment on the IPBES Global Assessment

May 09, 2019

The IPBES report on the state of our biodiversity paints a dark picture - species are going extinct at a rate tens to hundreds of times faster than the average over the last 10 million years. “The report’s message is clear. What we need now is massive, transformative and globally coordinated changes across all levels of society. We can’t just preserve, we must reverse the trend by increasing biodiversity locally, regionally and globally” says Director of Science at Kew Gardens, London and Focali-member, Prof. Alexandre Antonelli.

Focali-member Christel Cederberg is one of six researchers who has been awarded the Chalmers Foundation prize for research on societally important issues. The prize is awarded annually to highlight outstanding examples of Chalmers work and values, and 2019 the focus is on food – a vital component of global sustainability and one of our greatest challenges.

There is more than enough food produced in the world to feed everyone but close to 1 billion people are hungry or undernourished, according to the FAO. To feed another two billion people in 2050, food production will need to double globally. At the same time, a large amount of people suffers the effects of malnutrition from overweight or obesity. Join the Agricultural Research for Development Conference, Agri4D 2019, for drivers of change and sustainable food systems. Zero hunger by 2030, our shared challenge!

Reap what you sow: Turning agriculture into an opportunity for the youth in the Sahel

Reap what you sow: Turning agriculture into an opportunity for the youth in the Sahel

Apr 17, 2019

Rapid urbanization, swelling population and climate change will increase pressure on the agricultural sector, demanding innovation and work force to safeguard food production. Given that most of the population in Africa is under 25, ensuring attractive employment within the agricultural sector will be vital for food security. But is farming an attractive career choice for the youth of today? A new research project by Focali-member Hanna Sinare seeks to find this out.
