Climate Assessed SFM

This study analyses the concept of Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) from a climate perspective.

This study analyses the concept of Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) from a climate perspective.

The concept of SFM has evolved during the past 15 years, from focusing on sustainable timber production to becoming a general concept for sustainable development where all of the physical and socio-economic values of the forest are included.

There is a need for a critical scientific analysis of criteria, indicators and models for assuring the quality and effectiveness of efforts in the forestry sector. Our analysis will be based in scientific litterature and part from the FAO definition of SFM (for further information see background) as well as uniform criteria used for different certification processes (e.g. FSC) and proposals for climate change mitigation action (carbon sequestration) and adaptation in the tropical forest sector.

The aim of the study is to develop strategies for assessment and management of forestry poijects on a local and regional level in developing countries, with an emphasis on projects aimed at carbon sequestration and climate adaptation. During 2009 and 2010 Focali has made several presentations, which generated discussions and supported research resulting in publications elsewhere. During 2011 our research will focus on the climate effect of SFM. Focali aim to publish several policy briefs based on the latest research.

Anders Malmer, professor at the Forest Ecology and Management, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, is leading this study’s research.
