This Focali seminar features presentations by Patrick Meyfroidt and Sabine Henders on topics such as; global
land reserves and the prospects of conservation policies such as REDD, in the light of increasing global demand
for agricultural and forest commodities, and tools to quantify linkages between consumption demand
and land-use change. (REDD, Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation.)
The presentations will be followed by an open discussion on the role and feasibility of demand-side approaches
to managing the consumption of deforestation-inducing commodities.

The Focali member Martin Persson will moderate the seminar. He is Assistant Professor, Physical Resource Theory, Department of Energy & Environment, Chalmers University of Technology.
About the speakers:
Patrick Meyfroidt from the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium, holds a PhD in Geography and a degree in Sociology. His main research interests are land use and forest transitions, and feedbacks between environmental perceptions and land changes. Patrick is a well-known researcher in this field and has published
extensively on topics such as the links between globalization, international trade and land use change, as well forest transitions and land use displacement.
Sabine Henders, Focali member and PhD Candidate at Center for Climate Science and Policy Research, Linköping University, is in the last year of her PhD on the topic of “Land-use displacement and carbon leakage from forest conservation”. Her main research interest is on international displacement of deforestation and the links between global consumption patterns and land-use change. Together with colleagues she is working on advancing methods to quantify the extent of deforestation emissions embodied in international trade.
