“Georgetown ain’t got a tree. We got the trees” - Amerindian Power & Participation in Guyana’s LCDS

“Georgetown ain’t got a tree. We got the trees” - Amerindian Power & Participation in Guyana’s LCDS

New paper co-authored by Sam Airey and Focali member Torsten Krause, examines to which extent the indigenous population of Guyana is included within the Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS). This single site case study concludes that significant adjustments are needed, e.g. more contextualised governance and decentralising power.

Trees, forests and water: Cool insights for a hot world

Trees, forests and water: Cool insights for a hot world

New paper from Focali members Aida Bargués Tobella and Ulrik Ilstedt together with 20 other authors from different universities, organisations and institutes; e.g. ICRAF, CIFOR, CIRAD and FAO. In this review they study the tree-climate relationships. The authors suggest that the direct effects via rainfall and cooling may be more important than the well-studied effects through the global carbon balance.

Whose Reality Counts? Critical Junctures in Livelihood Trajectories Under Deforestation

Whose Reality Counts? Critical Junctures in Livelihood Trajectories Under Deforestation

New article by Focali member Robin Biddulph and colleague Pelle Amberntsson published in Journal of Economic and Social Geography on livelihood trajectories and deforestation. This study examines livelihood trajectories over two decades in a village affected by deforestation in Northeast Cambodia. The objective was to use quantitative and qualitative methods to identify critical junctures structuring those trajectories. The junctures suggest an analytical framework for understanding deforestation-livelihoods dynamics in other contexts, which can disrupt narrative simplifications associated with community forestry.

Fruits from the forest and the fields: Forest conservation policies and intersecting social inequalities in Burkina Faso’s REDD+ program

Fruits from the forest and the fields: Forest conservation policies and intersecting social inequalities in Burkina Faso’s REDD+ program

New article by Focali member Lisa Westholm published in International Forestry Review analyzes REDD+ documents and data on resource use in two villages in Burkina Faso. The article examines how the participatory approach in Burkina's REDD+ program risks marginalizing certain groups, by failing to recognize how social relations of inequality shape resource use and access.

New PLOS collection: Measuring forest conservation effectiveness

New PLOS collection: Measuring forest conservation effectiveness

Scholars and practitioners have repeatedly called for more and better impact evaluation of conservation policies. This new PLOS collection of articles "Measuring Forest Conservation Effectiveness" brings together a series of studies that evaluate the effectiveness of tropical forest conservation policies and programs, such as protected areas, forest law enforcement, payments for ecosystem services, certification, and community-based forest management.

Focali member Göran Berndes is co-author of this editorial for Biofpr - Biofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining.

EFI report: Forest biomass, carbon neutrality and climate change mitigation

EFI report: Forest biomass, carbon neutrality and climate change mitigation

Focali member Göran Berndes, Associate Professor Chalmers, is the lead author of a newly published European Forest Institute report that provides insights into the current scientific debate on forest biomass, carbon neutrality and climate change mitigation. It draws on the science literature to give a balanced and policy-relevant synthesis, from both an EU and global perspective.

Heterogeneity and assessment uncertainties in forest characteristics and biomass carbon stocks: Important considerations for climate mitigation policies

Heterogeneity and assessment uncertainties in forest characteristics and biomass carbon stocks: Important considerations for climate mitigation policies

New article written by Focali members Eskil Mattsson, Madelene Ostwald, Göran Wallin and their colleague S.P. Nissanka published in Land Use Policy.

Focali-SIANI policy brief on the key to successful partnerships with forest communities

Focali-SIANI policy brief on the key to successful partnerships with forest communities

Focali member Torsten Krause has written a policy brief within Focali’s thematic collaboration with SIANI. In the policy brief “Building partnerships with forest communities” Krause compiles strategies for establishing effective partnerships with local communities who use or own forest land.

Forests on drained agricultural peatland are potentially large sources of greenhouse gases – insights from a full rotation period simulation

Forests on drained agricultural peatland are potentially large sources of greenhouse gases – insights from a full rotation period simulation

New article co-authored by Focali member Åsa Kasimir published in Biogeosciences. Through a PhD project by Hongxing He funded by the Swedish Energy Agency performed at the department of Earth Sciences at the University of Gothenburg, they show that forest production on drained peat soil is a large source of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.

Bioenergy production and sustainable development: science base for policymaking remains limited

Bioenergy production and sustainable development: science base for policymaking remains limited

New article co-authored by Focali member Göran Berndes and the Focali Project Coordinator Maria Ölund published in GCB Bioenergy. The article is based on a systematic review with the aim to analyze the state of knowledge about how the production of bioenergy resources affects sustainable development.

Sustainable bioproducts in Brazil: disputes and agreements on a common ground agenda for agriculture and nature protection

Sustainable bioproducts in Brazil: disputes and agreements on a common ground agenda for agriculture and nature protection

New article co-authored by Focali member Göran Berndes published in Biofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining, 18 March 2016. The work contributed to a three-year project within IEA Bioenergy on Mobilization of sustainable bioenergy supply chains.
