New Era in the Fight Against Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon: Opportunities to Improve Policy Effectiveness
In a new policy brief from SEI Focali researchers Javier Godar and Toby Gardner look at why deforestation policies in Brazil, after a decade of success, are now stalling. This brief continues to propose new strategies for decision-makers to yet again increase the effectiveness of forest conservation.
Stockholm Environment Institute, SEI, publishes a new policy brief with the headline "A new era in the fight against deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon: Opportunities to improve policy effectiveness". The brief is produced by Focali researchers Javier Godar and Toby Gardner and is based on their study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
In their study and policy brief they claim that Brazil’s concerted efforts to reduce deforestation in the Amazon have been very successful, but that progress has stalled in recent years. In this brief Gardner and Godar examine some of the reasons for this shift and suggests new strategies for decision-makers’ consideration. They present a detailed analysis of official data that suggests the government’s strategies have been more effective with large landowners than with smallholders or properties in remote areas. New, more tailored and incentive-based approaches are needed to keep reducing deforestation.
