Focus area:
My research is about the use of discourse analysis to explore the role of forests in international climate politics. The ‘case’ I’m looking at is the UNFCCC negotiations on Reducing Emissions for Deforestations and forest Degradation (REDD+). I use a Hajer (1995) inspired approach to argumentative discourse analysis to: a) map the overarching discourse on REDD+; b) explore where and how discourses in REDD+ are manifested and articulated. Here I look specifically at carbon forest monitoring practices and the implementation of social safeguards; c) how discourse enable or constrain policy change, here I look at the emerging 'landscape approach' discourse within REDD+ and whether/how it is changing REDD+.
